A mantra is a word or phrase to just say and repeat to yourself. During japa meditation, the purpose of the mantra is to give you something to put your focus on and anchored in your thoughts. Many people like to use words like peace. You may wish to choose a mantra like Soham or Hamsa, as this is commonly used as a mantra which is literally translated to I am. It is frequently attributed to as the mantra of manifestation. I like using the Buddhist Mantras because they are not in my native English language so they do not trigger any additional thoughts when chanted.
First, find a comfortable place to sit. It’s most beneficial to find a quiet space where you will not be disturbed. Need to sit cross-legged on the floor as your comfortable position for you. The benefits of meditation are most significant when practicing daily.
